Gaufridy knows the truth, he tries to tell this truth to Michaelis who comes down to question and threaten him.. Michaelis first talks about how priests, members of the secular clergy are prone to such things…this has been his life mission, to demonstrate exactly what he is witnessing. He brings the evidence against him. Gaufridy realizes his fate is sealed. Not only is there contrived evidence, but also Michaelis is an enemy within the church, seeking to take down the priesthood. A madness comes over him…he cannot believe God would turn his back on him like this. If God existed, why would this happen to him. In his anger, he states: "If I were a witch, I would certainly give my soul to a thousand devils."
Opens to a jail cell in the dungeon. An armored guard (the narrator) is standing guard.
