about

April 30, 1611 was the day of Gaufridy's execution. With head and feet bare, a rope around his neck, Gaufridy officially asked pardon of God and was handed over to the execution. Still living after the torture of strappado and squassation, Gaufridy was escorted by archers while dragged through the streets of Aix for five hours before arriving at the place of execution. The priest was granted the mercy of strangulation before his body was burned to ashes, however Michaelis fought the judges orders and lit the fire himself before he could be strangled.
The chorus and orchestra evoke a kind of tribal, primitive ritual of sacrifice, ironically harkening back to the times the church claims to have eradicated.
